Momentum became a language.

Super Mario Bros.

Acceleration, running speed, variable-height jumps, enemy bounces, and scrolling courses made movement expressive. Eight worlds taught combinations of a tiny, consistent rule set.

Characters changed the jump.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad offered different speed, strength, and jumping behavior. Throwing enemies and vertical stages replaced the original stomp-centered grammar.

Super Mario World

Multiple exits and Star Road made completion a process of discovering connections. Yoshi added carrying and color abilities, while the cape turned flight into a sustained skill.

Super Mario Sunshine

FLUDD cleaned surfaces, attacked, hovered, launched, and rocketed Mario through spaces designed around water pressure. Isle Delfino unified the adventure geographically.

2D learned from 3D.

New Super Mario Bros.

Mario returned to side-scrolling as a polygonal character with wall jumps and ground pounds. Mega and Mini Mushrooms altered both his scale and the course.

Mario ran around tiny planets and crossed changing gravity fields whose “down” rotated beneath him. Motion input supplied the spin and a pointer enabled assistance.

Fixed viewpoints, compact stages, timers, and flagpoles made 3D readable like a traditional course. Stereoscopic depth helped players judge jumps and spatial illusions.
