Gallery thesis

The trail moves from teletype decisions to graphical simulation, multimedia textbook, mobile entertainment, and a modern edition that begins to widen whose experience is represented.

Historical context: the real Oregon Trail was part of settler colonialism and Indigenous displacement. Early games largely omitted that history; this gallery names both what they simulated and what they left unseen.

OREGON

Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, and Paul Dillenberger built the text game for an eighth-grade class. Teams chose supplies, pace, food, and responses through a printer terminal.

What changed

One classroom’s game became a school resource.

OREGON on the MECC network

Rawitsch retyped the preserved BASIC listing into MECC’s statewide network and recalibrated events from emigrant diaries. It became the system’s most popular program.

1980

What changed

The mainframe journey entered the microcomputer lab.

OREGON, Elementary Volume 6

Most travel stayed text-based, but hunting changed from typing BANG to shooting visible targets. Local disks moved the experience into everyday classrooms.

Named party members, professions, crossings, landmarks, weather, disease, spare parts, tombstones, and scored arrival created a rhythm of choices and consequences.

What changed

The classroom icon acquired a visual interface.

The Oregon Trail Deluxe

Mouse control, 256-color VGA graphics, sound, and more professions translated the Apple II structure for home and school PCs without abandoning its expedition model.

More roles, supplies, routes, towns, advice, and styled encounters expanded the trip beyond the iconic sequence, emphasizing research and place as well as survival arithmetic.

The Oregon Trail: 3rd Edition

CD-ROM video, voice, and animated encounters made historical people and places the spectacle. It closed the franchise’s original Minnesota institutional chapter.

Cartoon illustration and touch activities recast the expedition for portable sessions. Party management and hazards remained, but animation and minigames came forward.
